The Village

View of Irola Irola church Magra valley

Irola is a small medieval hill village in a panoramic and peaceful position, seemingly unknown to the outside world.  Park your car in the small piazza and walk through the village's narrow medieval streets, soaking up the ambience created by hundreds of years of history. You pass under vaulted archways, and the streets are paved with small sloping steps, which were laid for donkey’s years ago.

The village has around 50 households which are owned and maintained by the descendants of Irola. Some visit at weekends others for months at a time and some return from around the world once every few years. You will find the villagers exceptionally friendly and happy to welcome visitors. There are neighbouring houses on both sides of Felicita;  occasionally their Italian owners will occupy them but they do not interfere in any way.

The land slopes downhill in front of the house, with trees, rocks and shrubs forming cool walks and shady glades. This is a paradise for country lovers; at dawn and dusk it may be possible to glimpse in the distance the occasional deer and even wild boar, as they venture from cover in search of food. We recommended you bring a pair of binoculars to sight eagles and other rare birds as they soar above the hills and down the valleys. Don't worry if you do forget yours as there is a small pair in the house, all part of the service!
